Topic - Breathing Life into Enterprise Data Models: Using the SBVR to build an Enterprise Business Vocabulary

For over 30 years data practitioners have been attempting to create a single, integrated view of data across their organisation – The Enterprise Data Model (EDM). Unfortunately differing and firmly entrenched naming conventions, definitions and business rules in different parts of the organisation have always made this unified picture difficult to achieve.  More recently, the EDM’s link to the technical environment, (traditionally only to database designs), has expanded to include unstructured data, XML and OWL. This brings into question the use of E-R or Class Models to represent the EDM.  A solution to these dilemmas may lie in the use of the OMG’s Semantics of Business Vocabulary and Business Rules (SBVR) standard, released in 2008. This presentation will provide an overview of the SBVR standard in the context of Enterprise Data Modelling.
